Welcome to BrainIT 2004
BrainIT 2004 will be held in Kitakyushu, Japan, March 7-9, 2004, as the Part IV of the International Symposium on Bio-Inspired Systems. You are invited to participate in BrainIT 2004, which celebrates the third anniversary of the founding of the Graduate School of Life Science and Systems Engineering.
The Graduate School of Life Science and Systems Engineering was founded at Kyushu Institute of Technology in 2000 to open up new fields of technology inspired by the brain and other biological systems. The aim of the Department of Brain Science and Engineering of the Graduate School is to establish the foundations of the Brain-Inspired Information Technology.
Recent advancements of brain science and modeling of natural neural systems have brought us the possibility of designing neuro-devices and dedicated VLSI chips that perform functions of the brain. Although neuro-devices are specifically various sensory devices, memory devices, recognition devices, information integration devices, linguistic devices, motor control devices, and so on, the Brain-Inspired Information Technology covers a wide range of information technology based on all of the information processing systems that contain the neuro-devices. Our aim is therefore to establish the "foundations" of Brain-Inspired Information Technology.
The purposes of BrainIT 2004 are to provide a forum for exchanging and polishing ideas and recent research results in the relevant areas and to make clear how to approach the new field, Brain-Inspired Information Technology.
Scope and Topics
BrainIT 2004 encourages experimental, computational, theoretical, and engineering papers addressing the following areas (but not limited to). Papers that link the following topics are also encouraged and papers that link brain science and information technology are particularly welcome. Regular papers for poster sessions may include more speculative discussions on Brain-Inspired Information Technology. All regular papers are reviewed.
(1) Sensing Systems
Natural and Artificial Vision; Vision and Image Processing; Brain-Inspired Sensors; Artificial Bio-Sensors; Auditory and Speech Processing; Hybrid Intelligent Systems; Sensory Integration; VLSI implementation of sensing systems
(2) Innovational Computing
Computational Modeling of Neural Systems; Neurophysiologically Plausible Modeling of Neurons and Networks; Chaotic neurons and networks; Fuzzy Neural Networks; Learning Algorithms; Genetic Algorithms; Reinforcement Learning; Independent Component Analysis; Principal Component Analysis; Self-Organizing Maps; Self-Organizing Relationships; Natural Language Processing; Novel Brain Information Processing
(3) Recognition and Behavior
Psychology; Cognitive Information Processing; Cognitive Modeling; Adaptive Control; Adaptive Behavior; Robotics;
BrainIT 2004 is open to all persons working at the frontier in the range from Brain Science to Information Technology (modeling and hardware realization) and offers them the opportunity of presenting and discussing ideas that open up the new field, Brain-Inspired Information Technology.
Sessions
BrainIT 2004 will feature a single track program consisting of oral and poster sessions in the afternoons, following plenary lectures of the symposium in the mornings. Invited papers will be presented orally (45 min including discussion). Regular papers will be presented in the poster sessions; all posters will be complemented by a short oral presentation (3 min each) in the oral sessions without questions.
Three oral and three poster sessions will be organized: Sensing Systems, Innovational Computing, and Cognitive and Behavior. These sessions will cover a wide range of topics from neuroscience to hardware implementation. Regular papers submitted to these sessions are reviewed. The poster sessions offer high-quality posters and an opportunity for researchers to share their work and exchange ideas to establish the new field, Brain-Inspired Information Technology.
Edited Book"The procedure for submitting manuscripts for edited book was alterd. "The book of extended abstracts will be available at the Symposium. All authors are invited to submit a manuscript for consideration for publication in the Symposium Edited Book. It is highly recommended that interested authors include discussion and/or speculation about the new research field, Brain-Inspired Technology, on the bases of their investigation in the manuscript.
On this Web site, we have announced that authors are kindly requested to hand in the manuscript at the registration desk on March 7-9, 2004. We, however, now alter the procedure for collecting manuscripts. The paper will be published in the Symposium Edited Book (“Brain-inspired Information Technology Series (tentative)”) as an International Congress Series of Elsevier Science Co. The manuscripts should be submitted according to guidelines supplied by the ICS editorial office via an online submission site till 31st, March, 2004. You will receive information for authors from the ICS editorial office in the near future.

Instructions to Authors
Abstract submission; Abstracts must be electrically submitted in a camera-ready form together with a Registration Form.
Camera-Ready Form
1) Format; PDF file
2) Length; 1 page of A4 paper.
3) Style; See sample here.
Abstracts should consist of separate sections (e.g. Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion and References). The title, author names, affiliations and the principal author’s email address must be centered. Type the abstract in two columns. Each column of the text should be left and right justified. Leave 20mm margins on the all sides.
